Toric Contact Lenses
Toric contact lenses are specially designed contacts that enable those
with astigmatism to wear contacts. There was a time when individuals
suffering from astigmatism were unable to benefit from the convenience
and affordability of contact lenses. Those days are over.
Toric contacts
are now available as disposable lenses, as well as frequent replacement,
colored and multifocal contacts.
Toric lenses are manufactured with the exact same material as regular
soft contacts, and are also available as rigid gas permeable (RGP)
lenses. The difference with toric lenses is in the lens design. These
lenses are designed with curvatures at differing angles. They provide
two powers - one to address astigmatism, the other to address hyperopia
or myopia.

Toric contacts are typically more expensive than regular contacts, but
outstanding savings can be found when purchasing online. Of critical
importance before buying torics online is ensuring that your lens
prescription is up to date. Fitting toric contact lenses is more complex
than are regular contacts, and it is critical to have your eye care
practitioner ensure that the lens fit is right.
Those individuals with very mild astigmatism may be able to successfully
wear regular lenses or RGP lenses. RGP lenses are more rigid than
regular soft contacts, and the cornea tends to conform to the RGP lens
shape, negating the need for astigmatism correction. Very powerful soft
contacts can also negate the need for astigmatism correction. Never
assume that your astigmatism can be successfully addressed with contacts
other than toric lenses unless your eye care specialist tells you so.
An important difference with toric lenses compared to others is that
they are specially designed to ensure that no lens movement exists.
Because there are two powers within the lens, any movement can greatly
hamper crisp vision. The manufacturers often achieve this stability by
designing their toric lenses to be bottom heavy, thus preventing any
rotation on the eye.
There are a variety of soft toric contact lenses on the market today.
This selection allows a wearer to choose different replacement
schedules, address the need for multifocals, and even choose lenses in a
variety of colors. It is worth noting that regular toric lenses are
available as daily disposable lenses, however, most toric colored
contacts are available only as non disposable lenses. Some exceptions do
exist.
Every large scale contact lens manufacturer produces at least one brand
of toric contact lenses. The most popular toric contact lenses on the
